4 steps to becoming a digital nomad
  • Save

A digital nomad is a person who uses telecommunications to earn a living. They can work from any location by using the internet to stay in contact with their clients.

For many people, this seems like the perfect lifestyle to work and travel all over the world. If you love technology and travel, this is an excellent way to work. As you can guess, freelancing online fits the digital nomad perfectly.

So, you want to live this lifestyle, but you’re not certain how to go about it. Here are 4 steps in becoming a digital nomad

1) Get a side hustle

Start looking for side hustle online. Something that you can eventually earn a living from. It won’t happen overnight, so you’ll have to be patient. Keep grinding and you’ll soon be making enough to replace the income from your full-time job.

2) Save, save, save

Make sure that you save, at least, six months equivalent of your day job salary before you make the step to leave your day job. Because you’ll be working for yourself, you’ll have to have back-up during the lean months.

3) Have a second (and third) income

Working for yourself can be a risky business. Having other sources of income is a must if you’re to enjoy the digital nomad lifestyle. Focus on having some source of passive income. Some ideas include:

  • Writing an Ebook
  • Investing in dividend stocks
  • Renting out your house while you travel, or renting it a portion if possible. Short term rentals are best since they give you more flexibility when you want to come back home.
  • Affiliate marketing.
  • Selling a course.

Those are just a few ways you can earn passive income.

4) Leave your 9-5

That makes sense, right? You can’t become a digital nomad while you’re still working at your regular day job. By this time, though, you’ll have been freelancing for some time and have built up a good reputation online. A good reputation can mean more income earning potential.

Of course, the gig economy is not the only way to becoming a digital nomad. Other ways include:

  • Internet marketing. This can include affiliate marketing as mentioned above.
  • Starting a blog. This can be a part of your internet marketing strategy or you can sell products directly through your blog.
  • Creating a course that you can sell online.

So if you’re interested in the digital nomad lifestyle, those are some of the ways you use to get started.
